This project involved the demolition of an existing single storey outbuilding and the erection of a new single storey extension for ancillary domestic use. The front of the property sits within a row of terraced shops, cafes and housing and the rear is bounded by a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The property itself is a substantial Grade II* listed 3 storey Georgian town house, carefully converted from use as a Doctor’s surgery to a residential dwelling.
Due to heritage of the original asset and the surrounding area the success of the project was largely based on negotiations with the Conservation Officer to ensure the design met both the client's needs and gained local authority approval. The extension is therefore sympathetic to the original townhouse and finished to a very high standard. The extension is detached from the main building via a glazed link to further differentiate the heritage asset from the contemporary addition and the form is further broken down by a glazed section which provides plenty of natural light and allows the space to be connected with the landscaped gardens. The extension, together with internal alterations, improved the function and flow of the home and provided an internal space for the occupants to enjoy the natural environment.
