The site is located to the east of Biggleswade and its surrounding context is mixed residential with low architectural detailing. The proposal was designed to maintain as much privacy for the residents, as well as other local residents, whilst maximising the efficient use of the brownfield site.
The main entrance opens up in to a spacious and contemporary café / waiting area with views through the building out to the south gardens. The care home was designed with the many different needs of the residents in mind. Spacious lounges, quiet rooms and the garden terrace provide high quality amenity space for all resident’s needs and promote interaction and a sense of community.
The building façades were designed in a contemporary style, drawing on the local vernacular and have been articulated to ensure a domestic scale through differing roof heights, building angles and projections to create interest and reduce the overall massing. Large areas of glazing, extruded elevations, dormers and sympathetic planting and landscaping also serve to reduce massing and integrate the building into its environment. The appearance of the building is also based around the local use of various materials and architectural styles.
