A successful wedding venue needed additional social space and an on site accommodation facility. The existing structures situated on a working farm were carefully considered in the development of the proposal.
The design provided a new guest accommodation block including kitchen and dining space at ground floor level, and a bridal/honeymoon suite with additional accommodation to the first floor. The ground floor opens up from a glazed central atrium entrance to a lounge/entertaining space with access to the east and west accommodation wings. Natural light and expansive views to the proposed landscaped gardens and surrounding rural landscape were achieved via a large north-facing, full-height window which opens onto a terrace area at ground floor level allowing access to the garden. A private balcony overlooking the gardens was situated at first floor level to serve the bridal suite.
The open nature of the ground floor space allows for passive ventilation to be utilised, and across both new structures the timber cladding will also serve as a brise soleil to reduce overheating in summer affording the scheme the potential for a positive, sustainable and flexible footprint.
The extension to the existing bar area created additional internal space within the roof which allowed the addition of a roof terrace at first floor.
The overall scheme references the existing characteristics of the existing venue and context and further builds on this to create a contemporary yet rustic aesthetic through the use of timber cladding and glazed openings.
