The site was previously occupied by a farm with a cluster of residential buildings, including the original farm house, a barn conversion and an assortment of agricultural buildings. The initial design was conceived to maximise opportunities to regenerate the site through development of the former farm, enhancement of the setting in terms of the surrounding vernacular and through the creation of a sympathetic scheme for a care home and additional residential units.
The final proposal included a new build care home for older individuals with care support needs. This was to be divided across 2 floors with additional room-in-roof accommodation as the building height needed to be limited to 2 storeys in line with surrounding existing buildings.
The ultimate design met the brief in terms of scale, form, massing, layout, detailing, materials and impact on the existing neighbouring properties. The mass of the building was broken up through the use of different facade materials and varying ridge heights. The result was a 64 bed scheme which met the functional needs of a care home, whilst respecting the local context.
